It was quite a year for our honeybees this season. We’re so proud of our girls…they’ve been working hard at all of their locations. We were fortunate to be able to provide you, our customers with so many varieties of raw honey.
Now the honeybees are happy in their beehives for Winter. They will eat their stored honey, munch on pollen patties, probably buzz to each other about the happenings of the season past, and protect the Queen Bee. All the while, maintaining a 92 degree temperature in their little cluster inside the hive.
In addition to here on our website, we sell our products at North Union Farmer's
Market at Shaker Square INDOOR MARKET 9-Noon every Saturday
morning, beginning December 4, 2010 until April, 2011. Some people still ask where we are – there
are two storefronts on the NE quadrant of the square, between Dewey’s Popcorn Shop and CVS Pharmacy. We are in
the storefront closest to Dewey’s.

LOCAL
HONEY and ALLERGIES
If you suffer from springtime allergies, consider adding a little local
honey to your prevention regimen. The theory is that, as with allergy
shots, daily exposure to a small amount of an allergen can desensitize the
body, allowing you to better resist it. The allergen culprit is
pollen -- the very same ingredient bees use to make their honey. Honey is
also an immune-system booster.
The practice of eating honey for this purpose doesn't have much research to
its credit. But some holistic practitioners have seen a drop in symptoms as a
result of prescribing it to patients. Eat one teaspoon daily of raw honey
– and be sure to get the honey from a beekeeper! Store-bought honey will
simply NOT do the trick!
Never give honey to babies 12 months
or younger, because of the risk of botulism infection.
Here
are a Few Benefits of RAW Honey:
Easily digested: Because sugar molecules in honey can convert into other
sugars (e.g. fructose to glucose), honey is easily digested by the most
sensitive stomachs, despite its high acid content. It helps kidneys and
intestines to function better.
Good source of antioxidants: It plays a big role in the prevention of cancer as well as
heart disease. Has a low calorie level: Another quality of honey
is that, when it is compared with the same amount of sugar, it gives 40% less
calories to the body. Although it gives great energy to the body, it does not
add weight.
Does not accommodate bacteria: This bactericide (bacteria-killing) property of honey is
named "the inhibition effect". Experiments conducted on honey show
that its bactericide properties increase twofold when diluted with water. It is
very interesting to note that newly born bees in the colony are nourished with
diluted honey by the bees responsible for their supervision - as if they know
this feature of the honey.
Do you have a cut? Honey is a natural antiseptic. Medical journals cite more
than 600 cases in which honey was employed to treat wounds. By applying honey
to your wounds, you prevent infections. Honey contains antimicrobial agents,
which prevents infections by killing the bacteria in and around your wounds.
When using honey it may help to heat it up before putting it on your wound
(caution test the heat before you place it on the wound). Many types of
bacteria can’t survive in honey, so wounds heal, swelling eases, and tissue can
grow back.
We keep bees at various farms and
fields in NE Ohio, so our honeybees can pollinate the various crops
grown. This is very beneficial, because each farm grows different plants,
we are able to offer different varieties of honey!
Just
to give you a bit of background, we own and maintain honeybee colonies at
various farms throughout Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula and Portage Counties. Our
honeybees do a fine job of pollinating for these farms, which produce a bounty
of vegetables, fruits and plants. Our Honey is harvested the old-fashioned way,
with no artificial heat, as pasteurizing honey removes most of the nutrients
that Mother Nature intended. Don't forget, when you eat raw honey made by
Ohio Honey Co. bees, you will be happy and healthy!
