The Worker Bees are all female!
Bee facts: How a bee becomes queen:
Worker bees select larva to be reared as potential queen bees. They are fed
nothing but royal jelly, a protein-rich substance. When they hatch, they
will fight one another with stingers until one remains.
After 11 days, a larvae will come from her cell to mate with male drones.
Her fertilized eggs will last throughout her lifespan of two years.
A queen bee starts laying eggs 10 days after mating. She can then produce up
to 3,000 eggs in one day.
Drones, or male bees, are slightly larger than worker bees but have no
stingers. Kept alive only for reproductive purposes, males are often kicked
out of the hive when food is scarce.
The lifespan of a worker bee is about 28-35 days. They feed the queen and
larvae, guard the entrance and keep the hive cool by beating their wings.
Honeybees wings can beat 11,400 times per minute, creating a buzzing sound.
They can use their stinger only one time and will die once they have stung
something. Some bees in the wild can use their stinger many times throughout
their lifespan.
Hives must be kept at a constant temperature-approximately 92.3 degrees. Workers will cool the hive or
swarm near the queen to keep that temperature.
How does
cooking with honey with honey differ from cooking with sugar?
Honey adds a sweet, smooth, and distinctive taste to recipes. It has marvelous "keeping" qualities due to its ability to absorb and retain moisture. These qualities retard drying out and staling of baked goods in which honey is an ingredient.
Honey requires no refrigeration; store at room temperature.
Honey will add a golden brown glaze to your baked goods. When substituting honey for sugar, reduce oven baking temperatures by 25°F to prevent over-browning.
How sweet is
honey? Measure for
measure, the fructose in honey makes it sweeter than sugar. Honey at 21
calories per teaspoon -- just slightly higher than sugar -- is about 2 times
as sweet.

Relaxing honey bath: Put 2 oz of honey in a glass with 5 drops of lavender oil. If the honey is too thick, heat it by placing the glass in warm water. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of the honey-lavender mixture to your bathwater to help you relax and combat insomnia.
Heals abrasions by drawing excess water from the tissues and reducing
swelling. In addition, honey contains a germ-killing substance called inhibine, which helps prevent infections. Spread the honey directly on the
wound and cover with a sterile bandage.

For relief of
asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory ailments: Honey is an outstanding
household remedy that can be used in combination with various medicinal
herbs. For relief of coughs and wheezing associated with bronchitis or other minor respiratory ailments, mix 1 teaspoon of finely
chopped fresh thyme in a little honey. Take the mixture orally as needed to
soothe inflamed lungs and airways.
honey definition: A sweet viscid
fluid, esp. that collected by bees from flowers of plants
and deposited in the cells of the honeycomb.

endearments;
`Honeying and making love.'' - Shakespeare.
Rough to common men, but honey at the whisper of a lord. - Tennyson.

Honey bees communicate by dancing. The dances tell worker bees where to find nectar. This bee has no dancing friends! Print this page and help her find her way to the flower.
